Humpty On The Edge
Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall
Suffering greatly and thinking about it all
He was right on the edge and could hear the rescue teams calling
He had not yet jumped, but somehow had already fallen
For his shell remained intact and clothes untattered
But the damage was internal, where his soul lie shattered
Moments away from meeting his demise
His life began to flash right before his eyes
It all started back at his childhood home
Where he’d spend long days and nights playing with the heir to the throne
He never seemed unhappy nor showed signs of dismay
But it was weird that for some reason he hated Easter holiday
He was helpful to the future king, provided input to make his mind up
And never ceased to brighten his day so he called him “Sunny-Side Up”
The would-be king was scatterbrained and often times rambled
Ironically, it’d be his and not Humpty’s thoughts that were scrambled
They stayed on the same page and their friendship was never vague
One Halloween, the prince dressed as an angel so Humpty could be a deviled egg
As kids they flew kites, he taught the prince to ride bikes, backed him up in college bar fights, and even wingmanned the prince’s wife.
May or may not have bailed him from jail once or thrice, covered up the prince’s lies and paid the price; I think you get the picture… They were going to be friends for life.
So what’s happened since, all these years later?
The king asked himself now that consequences have never been greater
He sat to ponder thought after thought
As he watched in terror as Humpty reached the tip top
Slowly, he started realizing after a moment of reflection,
It’s been years since Humpty had started moving in a different direction
Humpty used to always smile and be quick with a joke
But now always seems down, while wiping away tears of yolk
He always had unwavering optimism and charisma unmatched
But slowly he’s become desolate, often leaving ideas unhatched
The highest position in the King’s Court is where Humpty had just been promoted
Yet Humpty never seemed content and the king was ashamed not to have noticed
When asked, “What’s the matter?” Humpty would pass it off as being tired
So the king always shrugged it off and continued building his empire
Humpty tried to reach out; invited the king to a new restaurant to taste
The king wanted to but couldn’t, so he sent a servant in his place
Stunned, standing frozen as if a permanent fixture
The king was dumbfounded now that he saw the bigger picture
Every time he was out trying to pull sword from stone
Humpty was back at the castle in dire need of a friend to call his own
Every time he was out wishing wizards to give him the touch of gold,
All Humpty needed was a supportive embrace, someone to hold
The king snapped out of his trance but did too little too late
Humpty leaped, destined to meet his fate
On this dreary day, overcast and breezy,
Humpty fell and it was over… easy.
In order for this tragedy to never happen again
It’s everyone’s duty just like the king and his men
To reach beyond ourselves and be there for all of this world’s children
So we can put Humpty together again, but next time… from within.
