Hyperbolic

I’m sorry

That’s what you said to me

After a year of anguish, pain, and rage

All of it simply washed away

This wasn’t the path we were supposed to take

The dates would have gone on

The movies we had planned to see

The kisses I wanted to steal from you so badly

The comfort we should have found in one another

I was heartbroken when you found those in her instead

And then I was mad

Mad at her for coming in between us

Mad at myself for not saying what I wanted to say

But most of all, I was mad at you for letting her get in the way

It was his fault

That’s what I told myself when it hurt

As I watched you two go on dates

As I listened to her gush about how much she loved you

As I felt you drifting further away from me

You were finding comfort in her instead

I’m sorry

That’s what you said to me

As the pain that blinded me washed away

All the details came flooding back

That wasn’t the path you wanted to stay on

I should have heard the sadness in your voice

I should have known how trapped you felt

I should have seen how badly you wanted to escape

I should have been there for you

No matter how badly I felt or how hurt I was

Because no matter what

You were my friend

I abandoned you

In my own pain, I isolated us both

I shouldn’t have blamed you

I shouldn’t have let you be alone

And for that

I’m sorry
