I Almost Believed It

Stings of pain prick my cheek, I've done bad, My master's smirking at me. Gritting my teeth so hard I can feel them degrading, I force tears back into my thoughts. A war to end our suffering is coming to an end. Just a little while longer and it will all end. The months went on, and so did the beatings. Every night restless, everyday I broke. The day we were set free I woke to happiness. Soon I realized, we were no more humans than we were yesterday. We were set apart, We were animals. And I almost believed it. Laws tried to protect us, but the white man is above. I have no money, No future. I am left to rot. Why were we the only ones to prove our humanity? When will equality become reality? Maybe someday. And I believe it.
