I am
I am
By Erin Goff
I am me, myself and I
Grammatically
I am living, human, and female
Scientifically
I am a 3.9, a plot point, and a statistic
Mathematically
I am a guiding hand, a broken heart, and a northern star
Metaphorically
I am a contradiction
Simply
I drift through each day just the same
like the days between tv episodes
like years before the movie sequel
like the pages of a novel too boring to be written
I am the classic suburban story no one wants to hear
I am the girl before the guy
I am sanity before its break
I am the picture on your wall you don’t remember hanging
and pass by without even knowing I’m there
I am background music
I am almost and so close
I am white noise and filler pages
I am the name in the credits no one bothers to read
I am not the success story
I am not the sob story
Hell, I’m not a story at all
I’m nothing but snarky comments
and lame jokes
Broken promises and daydreams
Lazy and useless
Potential without the drive
Courage without the challenge
I’m the character in the book they cut out for the movie
I’m a lost UPS package
I’m an unopened letter
I’m a shade of grey
I’m a puzzle piece with no puzzle
I’m a night’s dream that vanishes at sunrise
I’m the line in the song that never quite fit
I am the face in the hallway without a name
I am the girl who is sarcastic but not clever
Who is okay at this and pretty good at that
But, never great at anything
Never the best at anything
Never wanted for anything
I am the girl who won’t be remembered
But, isn’t even worth the time to forget
