I am From
I am from swing sets,
From monkey bars and slides
I am from the big city known as the triple-D
Where apartments lay as far as I can see
I am from the corner store right next to my house
The market place
Where fun walks down the candy aisle!
Are no longer there…
I am from a family who strives for the best.
From education to occupation
I am from the spicy aroma, lingering in my kitchen
From a country with great pride and faith
Where Amharic is spoken all throughout the day
From the minute long prayer
I recite every Sunday.
To a church much older than I,
At which I attend at long hours
I am from a mother who does all for her children
Knowing one day they’ll do the same.
