"I AM FROM"

I am from cord less phones

from stereos and touch phones

I am from the little yellow house

weeds growing in the gutter

I am from the pine tree

The oak tree whose long gone limbs I remember as if they were my own.

I'm from family gathering and long black hair

from Sharon and Lawrence

I'm from arguing and heavy eating

and from stress.

I'm from washing dishes and taking out the trash

and Santa comes to town

I'm from secret Santa

I'm from Ypsilanti and African Americans, collard greens and mac n cheese.

I'm from a serious strong women with family photos on the wall.
