I Am From
I am from water rippling,
From splashing and playing,
In my kiddy pool,
On a hot summer’s day
While spending a few weeks with my Grandmother.
I am from chasing after a Swan’s truck,
To get a package of ice cream sandwiches.
I am from jumping and playing,
On a trampoline,
At my best friend’s house.
I am from petting and hugging,
My brand new puppy,
And putting my face,
Into his black and white soft fur.
I am from Jenny and Rob
From dyeing the gray hairs
To going to Las Vegas
From experimenting with recipes
To moving around
I am from no lying and get good grades
From reading and learning to support myself
I am from do your chores,
And be home on time
I am from you can do it,
Nothing is stopping you.
I am from Betty and Lynial.
I am from good old southern food,
Fried chicken, mashed potatoes and grits.
From divorce and remarry,
To meeting in Texas.
I am from my Paca’s amputated hand,
And my grandma’s broken wrist.
I am from swimming and cooking,
From appreciating what I have.
