I Am

I cry alone at night, Because I failed again. I trusted in my own might, Because I thought, “I am a man!” I stood, though all alone, And fought with all my heart. I was weary to the bone, For I had been tired at the start. Though I held nothing back, And gave it all I had. The odds against me did they stack, And my efforts seemed pitiful and sad. As had happened many times before, I collapsed on the ground so muddy I was quickly losing this war, For they had left me beaten and bloody As I struggled to my feat, I thought, “This cannot be the end!” As I stumbled down the street, I cried aloud for a friend. But my foes did see me stand, And I heard their evil roars. I fell down in the sand, For I knew I could fight no more I cried above for aid, And suddenly appeared a man I knew I had been saved, For beside me did he stand He put my enemies to shame, And sent them far away When I asked him for his name, Only two words did he say “I Am”
