I am an addict

I am an addict

My addiction has been passed down my family

Generation to generation

From my mom hiding her stash under her bed

To my grandma displaying her paraphernalia proudly on her shelf

We feel withdrawal if we don’t get our fix

Fingers twitching in anticipation of the next hit

Our drug takes us on adventures of the mind

So real you can almost feel it

You can tell we’re addicts

Bags under our eyes from staying up all night

Starved because we simply forgot to eat

Our addiction consumes us, we spend all our money on it

And all our time

We have a place of worship for our drug

Our opium den

Where people with likeminded addiction come to get their next fix

And anticipate new strains by new suppliers

Suggest types to try

Or to avoid

Our med card is easy to obtain

But our drug is not illegal

We sell it to children as well as adults

It’s not something the police will search for

It’s even in our schools

Our drug of choice?
