I AM ALSO HUMAN

I AM ALSO HUMAN
by Dennis G. Dizon

I have a dream that someday you and I
Could talk and walk together hand in hand
Where you are my brother and you'd treat me like one
Where the color of my skin nor the shape of my eyes
Won't deny me of your kindness for I am also... human!

I feel hunger, I feel thirst, I feel pain
I feel sorrow, I feel joy singing in the rain;
I've seen terror, I've seen beauty from within
What it's like to lose, to break, or to hope in vain
To dream of equality that the heavens have ordained!

But why do you treat me with brutality?
What did I do to deserve such cruelty?
Is it because of my race or my ethnicity?
Or the way I speak that you think is so funny?
Whatever it is, whatever reason there may be
I hurt like everyone else is that so hard to see?

You see, it's really not that hard to understand
If you'll open your eyes, your heart, and your mind
We are all children of God, no matter where we're from
Please lend me your ear, please lend me your hand
For I am your brother, yes, I AM ALSO HUMAN!
