I AM AWAKE

I am awake

Ferguson, Sandra Bland, Trayvon Martin

I am not asleep

MY eyes are open, I am aware, and I understand

I live in a country in which pigment of skin is what decides a person's success

I live in a country which allows lighter skin to receive lighter punishment

I live in a country which continually denies the obvious dehumanization of minorites

I AM AWAKE

I will not allow the government that so graciously protects me to suppress me

I will not allow the government that " made me civilized" dehumanize me

I will not allow the government that enslaved me to continue to enslave me

I AM AWAKE AND I WILL BE HEARD

I AM AWAKE AND I WILL PROTECT MY HUMAN RIGHTS

I AM AWAKE AND I WILL PROTECT THE NEXT GENERATION FROM UNJUST STEREOTYPING AND OPPRESSION

I am awake, and trust me I will not rest until WE achieve justice

I wrote this poem becasue it accurately describes how the continuous injustice against minorities has shaped who I am today and how I respond or treat others.
