I Am Ethnic

I am Joselyn because he said so because he willed it to be. Because my mother was my cab into this world, because of my attitude and my voice. Because of my style and my mind. I am from connections. From Soul food and Blues. I am from deep culture, strong, cultivating, a hodge poged togetherness. I am from the turnip garden the peppers and tomatoes that grow yards from my window. I am from Christmas services and Sunday Barbecues. From Sarah and Cathy, my blessings. I am from “who is bringing the macaroni and cheese”, and “time to go to church!” I am from “a closed mouth never gets fed”. From “treat folk how you wanna be treated.” I am from lively worship. Hand and foot coordination innate in every generation softly kneaded. I am from Memphis, starting there ending wherever. Unfamiliarity is my first cousin. From the bottom of the barrel; suffocation inspiring a new generation. Ethnicity shaping my separation, or knowledge of my past or lack thereof, today. Maybe later on i’ll find my way. I am Because of my head, shoulders, knees, and toes. Because my dad sent me. Because this world needs me.
