I Am Flawed

Magazines, movies, posters everywhere
Women with the perfect bodies, skin, hair
“The newest fat burning strategy is in!”
“Newest foundation for gorgeous skin”
Wear that, wear this, curl your hair, stand up tall
Don’t talk to him or her, ignore them all
Unless they are cool and have great fashion
We’re judged by looks, not by passion
Change yourself the world constantly tells
Pressure everywhere, it makes me want to yell

But that’s not who I am, I’m none of that
I’m not a number on a scale or a grade from school
I’m not defined by the number of men who deem me worthy
I don’t care whether my hair is straightened or curled
If my shirt matches my shoes or if my eyelashes are long
I don’t want to be judged by my bikini body or my thin tan legs
Don’t judge me by my beauty, my brains
Don’t judge me by my imperfect, body, skin, and hair
I’m so much more than that, can’t you see?
No, you can’t.
Because beauty isn’t skin deep.

I’m flawless in my love of my friends and family
My strong hope in humanity’s goodness
I’m flawless through my passion to help
How I’ll pull over on the side of the road to give a stray dog a home
Flawless is not perfect bodies, or skin, or hair
Flawless is a kind heart that beats for more than just me
It’s love and hope, its hurting and bleeding
Flawless is the night you held the razor to your wrist
But you didn’t cut because you knew you were stronger than that
Flawless is the time you stood up for the bullied student
Took her out to lunch and told her you liked her sweater
Flawless is not what society will judge by
Flawless is so much deeper than the eye
Flawless is not beauty, it is beautiful
