I AM HUMBLED

I used to be small …

I was small in shoe size,

                I was small in stature,

I was small-minded with what my eyes captured.

Small-minded I say …

                What does that mean?

                Don’t I know everything,

                Just like every other teen?

My elementary school was private,

                My middle school, too,

                But high school was public,

My first day was a zoo!

Suddenly everything was HUGE!!

                That zit on my nose,

                Those boobs on Rose!

                The lunch line at noon,

                Which seat do I choose?

My new friend is homeless,

                My lab partner’s hopeless.

                Her friend Michael is smoking,

                Rachael’s always joking.

Molly says she’s poor,

And her sister is four.

                They’re in “the system,”

But don’t feel secure.

Greg gets high,

Just to get by.

                Last year’s queen,

Slept with the dean!

My new friends have such problems.

                My

Small,

                                                Protective,

                                                                Comforting

                                                                                World

                                                                                                Seems so far away.

Small-minded I was.

Larger-minded I’ll be.
