I Am A Latino!

In Highschool I was constantly bullied

Bullied for being a white Hispanic

Bullied for not speaking Spanish fluently

Bullied for standing up with my ancestors

So this poem is for those tirones feos

I come from the place where the house I live in is bright yellow

Where the hood hangs out

Where our roads are paved with the blood of the west siders

I come from the place where mi papá trabaja mucho porque quiere que yo viva una buena vida

I come from the place where

Only abuelitas rule and absolutely no one can say no to “mijo”

Where waking up to tortillas each morning for breakfast was a norm

And leaving the house with a “Dios te bendiga”

Because only grandma knows that there are people out there who want to hurt me

I come from the place where just because my parents divorced it doesn’t mean God doesn’t love me

Where running to God is a strength and not a weakness

So don’t you dare look at my skin and tell me I am not a true Latino

My blood speaks of countless stories my family endured as braceros

My tongue will always hold its ground like the Aztec warriors

I will not let you bring down the anguish my abuelos, abuelas, tíos, tías, mi mamá, mi papá y todo lo que mi familia pasó

Because I am a Latino

Hi, I'm new. I've been through a lot lately, but I guess you wouldn't know that. I'm not trying to make me the center of attention. I'm not trying to impress anyone. I'm not trying to "show off", well how can I when I don't have the kind of skills to show. I'm here to simply get better. I'm here to make my voice heard when it matters. I'm here to be the person I want to be. A little bit about myself: At the time that I am writing this, I am 19. I graduated highschool and I'm now attending college at the University of Texas at Rio Grande Valley. Most people don't know where we're located, so I'll give you a hint. We're at the very bottom tip of Texas. Hope that helps haha. I am currently looking into majoring in Music Education with a minor in English. Teaching has always been my passion and motivating others to live and move forward has been a stronghold for me. When I was in Highschool we did this competition called UIL Poetry Interpretation. I was able to advance all the way to regionals, because I love the art of poems. I am very approachable and I'm willing to take any constructive criticism. I love music, writing, and playing video games. I don't feel like posting a picture of what I look like so I just put up one that looks similar to me. Feel free to shoot me an email or even a message on social media. My @ is all the same as my username. Well this was too long haha. It's nice to meet y'all and I hope to hear from you. :)
