I Am A Laugh
I am a laugh.
I am made of air, existing inside you,
residing right by you,
coming to your call to save you from silence.
To get a taste of me is breathless,
I'm restless, like your lungs.
Rarely appreciated; still
I work tirelessly to make sure you stay alive.
I can erupt from you like some foreign beast.
Or I can sneak up like the ocean,
soft, yet, filled with salty varieties.
Yes, I am a laugh.
The moveable mountain.
Strong and sure from the belly of a giant,
But I change like the seasons, only with more colors
than the fall.
Shapeshifting everyday to fit your mood.
Sometimes I am what you expect me to be.
Sometimes I surprise you.
What makes me different; my ability to be similar
To the person you need beside you.
I am a laugh.
Always there and never fleeting.
Stronger in the moments you don't need me to
Make a good day better.
Weaker in the moments you require me to
Save you from your tears.
I'm always in the curve of your lips,
the tip of your tongue,
words you can't remember.
But I will never forget you.
I can save you from yourself,
I hide your secrets
I bury your burdens
I disguise your sickness as life, just for you.
Weaving your doubts into baskets of bravery.
So you can catch yourself when you fall.
I am a laugh
booming like a bass drum,
distinct enough to cut paths through sound waves,
but at the slightest flicker,
I can shimmer into nothing.
I have built houses out of insecurities,
I have worn threads of shame,
And I have starved myself
So I could be skinny enough to let the wind
Pluck my skin from the earth.
You have been there too, because I am your reflection.
Your pools of sorrows, I have drank from your eyes.
You know me better than you think.
You know me better than you should.
But I know something now, that I wish I used to know.
And maybe it's time that the others knew too.
I know that
I am a laugh.
Never dull,
Sometimes beautiful,
Always contagious.
I spread like a virus,
only better for your health.
I am a laugh,
deserving, not demanding, recognition.
For my faults, my truth, my bravery.
I never surpass the extraordinary,
Because I am afraid of the littler things.
Anxiety is my friend, but I choose to evade her.
Courage is my greatest enemy
yet my greatest ally.
Perfectionism is my disease
gnawing away at my creativity.
Writing is my key
to the doors of enormity,
the gateway to legendary,
the bridge to infinity.
Crossing the spaces, by crossing my T's
dotting my I's accordingly.
On and on I travel
and I swear I'm not lost in this solar system.
Because while the others run in circles around their sun
I am a laugh.
I walk in elliptical orbits around a different target.
I exist in your space, but something bigger gives me breath.
And in this sense,
I am infinite.
I
I am a laugh.
That's what makes me different.
That's what makes me flawless.
I am a laugh.
