You said to me, "I am Lost"

So I etched the constellations

in every freckled part of my skin,

so you would always know where you came from

when you traced your fingers across my hips.

You said to me, "I am Sad"

So I learnt every joke I could

and tried as I may to make your lips

curl into a smile.

But like a river flooding into the ocean,

you got lost in the current of the water.

And I was merely a rock trying to slow the stream.

Trying to stop the barreling power that crashed

down and turned little pebbles like me,

to Sand.

So forgive me if when you say "I Love You"

my breath

catches in my throat,

like a waterfall stops in the air for a moment.
