I am ... me

My refection bears across the ocean

where my families lives are in motion

Africa is where they stay

and everyday they choose to pray

that I will seek an education

and seek a future free of depression

I was born and raised in Georgia

where my life is sheltered

I want to break lose and be free

and to discover who is truly me

Life has been extremely hard

some moments can leave you scarred

like how my dad left my mom and she is all alone

and sometimes it feels like "home" is not really home

How can you feel warm and safe

when throughout life you only lived one way

never had a second opinion

just did what you were told and made no decisions

America is cruel they say

you have to follow the American way

but in the process you lost your roots

and got confused on what to do and who to turn to

I am still figuring myself out

events in my life make me think thoroughly about

who I am and I am not sure yet

but life will tell me soon, I bet

and even though I am unsure who I am

I know that I am and will always be me
