I Am Me

In our crazy universe

There’s this box many people live in,

That they labeled “societal norms”

and no matter who we are

or what we believe in

we’re stuck with no choice but to conform to it

So we end up become robots, mindless identical clones

who blindly follow society’s narrow-minded vision

of what we should act like and who we should be

But do we ever once stop and reflect

that maybe, just maybe, we should follow

Our own preconceived visions

of this supposed “normalcy?”

Because I, for one, certainly have no intention

Of following this insular worldview people have

and reshaping my entire unique personality

because I believe, no, I know for a fact

that every person has their own special contribution to the world

and I’m certainly no exception

so why on earth should I be shunned for being me?

I’d like people to stare themselves down in the mirror, and face reality

that by suppressing their distinctive character and showing a facade to their surroundings

they won’t help anyone and they will  honestly destroy themselves from the inside out.

and not only that, but that by hiding what they have to offer to the world,

they are committing a grave injustice to themselves and others

by hiding potential brilliance and discovery

just by being subservient what their so called “average” friends have to say

So I’m going to look society straight in the eye and say

“you can keep your petty, labeled box to yourself

and let me follow my own path.

and nothing you say or do can withhold the heart and soul

that I have within me, to be expressed to everyone

so realize now that I am who I am, and I won’t be hidden

Do you understand?
