I Am Nellie Mae

I am Nellie Mae's granddaughter.

We both loved to do unlady-like things.

We hunted animals that we would slaughter.

But one day, she lost her bearings.

I am Nellie Mae's granddaughter.

On the day of her funeral,

My speech filled the room with laughter.

The ceremony was actually quite beautiful.

I am Nellie Mae's grandaughter.

Everyone says I'm exactly like she was.

I was given my name from my father.

When asked why, he said "because".

Because I'm Nellie Mae's granddaughter.

Because I brighten a cloudy day.

Because I am my father's daughter.

I am Nellie Mae.
