I Am Not An Assumption
I am more than what people see,
What people think,
What people imagine,
I am more than all of that,
Why you ask,
Because I am complex and dynamic,
More elaborate than any mere assumption can be.
The real me is colored,
Hispanic,
My people think that since I do not have the mother tongue that I am a fake,
A Gringa,
I say to them prepare,
Prepare for all my merengue love,
Prepare for all the culture and heritage of my ancestors,
For even if I do not have the language,
My pride for my race will demonstrate undenying appreciation and devotion.
It is true, I am just a youngster trying to find my way,
But that does not mean that I am unintelligent,
So many have accused me of being simpleminded because of who I look to be,
Yet, how can I appear as such when my accusers have such ignorant thoughts,
No evidence of any sophistication in their thinking,
Judging the youth of today by their vernacular and attitudes,
Too many prosecutors claim that my age proves that I should not have a say,
Just take away my voice,
With excuses as “You wouldn’t understand”,
And “Our problems are bigger than you”,
How can the so-called wiser say such if their mindsets are struggling with the changing tides,
If anything, they should be asking for my creativity,
My intuviness,
My sunshine in the midst of a never ending darkness,
For I will stand strong with the depth of my intellectual power.
I am here to show who I am,
Behind all the presumptions of color and age,
For a change as myself is too powerful to ignore.
