I am not "smart"

"Smart" people went to the other room to learn math, "smart" people people got different letters on their tests; letters I told myself didn't apply to me because I read them backwards. "Theres just something wrong with your eyes!" My grandpa used to claim. But it was more than that. I am dyslexia. At that time, it seemed the term dyslexia and stupid were interchangeable.  I could not let go of my desire to be the kind of “smart” everyone talked about. Society told me intelligence is only shown through scantrons or standardized tests. Constant academic integrity almost always resulted in poor evolutions.  Was I really not smart? How could this be? It was then that I challenged society’s label of on intelligence.  S-M-A-R-T. Dose knowing the order of those letters really make you what they spell? I innovated my own perception of what true intelligence encompassed. I decided smart was not memorizing facts but understanding why they happened. Smart was being good at working with people to get what you want or being able to clearly convey your feelings through art. Smart was possessing the wit to make a room full of strangers laugh, having the ability to make big things happened or understand people. From within my dyslexic head, mixed up ideas and feelings tumbled down onto paper, through music or art. I created wonderful things, wonderful things that “smart” people did not do. I realize intelligence is more than memorized facts or a GPA. I offer a form of smart the world has yet to recognize, unmeasurable through tests. I plan to do great, innovative and wonderful things with it. One can laugh at my lack of stellar grades or poorly spelled words but I know that I have the ability to create, innovate, express, change and make things happen. And in my eyes that is smart. But then again I am dyslexic, I may just see something different than you. So no society, I am not your form of "smart".
