I am Only Myself

looking through the lense
like peering through the trees
there will always be things
that go unseen

I let my hair fall however it may
in front of my eyes, cascading down my back in untamed waves
small streams of sunlight making their way through the canopy
sometimes lightly tinging my hair in gold before casting me back into the shadows
running wild through the lush green of the forest giggling and yelling into the silence
my white dress being caught and torn by every branch I pass
yet I do not slow, I will not hesitate
long and hard until I am forced to stand huffingly and puffingly
out of breath, bent over laughing, clutching at my sides as I cry
allowing myself to feel
breathless as I am surrounded by what is the essence of what should be
this paradise where I am Only myself

looking closer you can see the scars like freckles across my skin
a struggle from which I am forever stained, where I've picked at every imperfection
every blemish became a scab and every scab a scar
every pound I gained another stripe
there's not a hair in place as I sit on the mossy earth in my torn white dress
I am not flawless, I am no model
I am no where near perfection
but upon reflection
I am only Myself
