"I Am From...." Poem
I am from back roads and clear, blue Texas skies,
Roots that cross the Southern border to the Mexican side,
Tamales, entomatadas, and frijoles charros,
Their food traditional to my paisanos.
I am from Sunday "Futbolero" airing on T.V.
My dad and cousins screaming, "Let's go Messi".
On Sunday mornings you hear, "Apurale mijito",
Let's go visit la casa de Diosito.
I am from Christmas with my familia,
My first gift ever was a carriolita.
Accidents, consequences, and several itches,
My mother's worries, My knee got stitches.
I am from getting good grades is a parental expectation.
My parent's pending dreams, and my bright future become my primary aspirations.
Awards, plaques, certificates, and ribbons are seen in the living room,
My mother hopes I won't turn out like my cousins living life similar to buffoons.
I am from where hard work, loyalty, honesty, and patience,
Are particular characteristics found in the family's generations.
Working in the fields, building in the sun, washing dirty dishes,
Endeavoring to get the job done.
I am from if you don't succeed try, try, try
Si se puede! Is the "lema" my family lives by.
