I am the Rock

Arriving to the location Bewildered by the scene Screams oh the screams Filled with hatred And slipped with ease Walking up the steps Terrified and shaking like a tambourine Awakening my dignity that slept “Get out of here you negroes” The protesters ringed Anger filled their eyes Rage raced through their veins Adrenaline hyping me up to get away But my pride swayed me to stay Face the hate; my pride sang My tears being bullets And my eyes loaded guns I was bowed away and I began to run I shunned the crowd Satisfied and yet not proud Returning to the angry mob I listened to my pride and faced the hate I walked tall like a tree as I anticipate my fate Hit in the head, spat on in the face? Oh no not today Should I lay down and let love die, No not I I walked with the air borne members Should I stand up and let love live. Yes, Yes! I survived I graduated above all this Held my ground after the airborne members left me After all the segregation I am the rock After the attempts of integration I am the rock Even during the hatred I was the rock

This poem is inspired by the courageous journey of the infamous "Little Rock Nine" in which i placed myself within the situation in order to interpret the various emotional appeals during the period. This is a personal interpretation created to elicit an individual's very own emotional response as they receive insight into the obstacles these nine courageous students went through.
