I Am a Student Too
Oh Band, how I love you!
With the music, late nights, practice,
And more.
But why is it that you require all of my time?
According to school,
I should be a full time student.
My textbooks stare up at me from my desk
And yet my head is telling me to go practice:
My flute, piccolo, clarinet, piano and drum pad.
There's just so much to do and so little time to do it,
But I am still expected to be on top of everything.
When my practice runs long,
My homework runs even longer into the night
And spills into the time I'm waking up.
What should I do?
I need good grades to get scholarships
And yet I need more time to practice my instruments!
There needs to be more time in a day.
Way back in my first or second year of high school,
My boyfriend at the time and I discussed what longer days would be like.
We both agreed that we'd prefer forty-eight hour days
Just because there'd be enough time to get things done.
Of course, time doesn't work that way.
So, what if weekends were three days?
Three day weekends are a life saver;
There's extra time to get more work done as well as time to catch up on sleep.
Sleep! How I miss you.
I wish there were time but six to seven hours will have to suffice
And yet you evade my insomniactic brain!
I guess four to six hours will be enough to keep me content.
So, school, I ask you,
How should I manage my time?
I promise that I'm doing my best,
But it doesn't seem to be enough.
I've given up a consistent social life
In order to squeeze in time for practice, homework, food, and sleep.
And yet, it's still not enough.
Band is still demanding all of my time
While school, likewise, is fighting for my attention.
My grades are fair,
But I fear that they're going to slip.
I've already given up one weekend;
Spending time with my family,
And getting something else of importance taken care of.
Now I am behind; even if it's only a little.
I now have to play "catch up,"
And yet this weekend will also be swamped.
With two different Marching Band events tonight and tomorrow night,
I'll be left with little time to get my other work done!
Band, as much as I love you,
I am a Student too.
