I Am You.
I am you.
Is that not true?
Do I not do,
the things that you do?
I spill my milk on Sundays.
Do you do that too?
Do you trip over words,
trip to tie your shoes?
But I’ll line up these qualities
and compare them to yours
how do you slam your poetry?
how to you slam your doors?
And doors have been slammed
“Oh, surely, of course.”
But I ask- Oh, I wonder,
are they the same doors as yours?
Or do I have this one difference?
This door that is mine,
a door slamming-slammed
I can count to define.
Me- only myself.
I’m one of a kind.
By a definition, you see,
that I can’t seem to find.
I get lost in specifics
to create a hope that I’m true
To say that I’m someone and not only you.
But for this to work,
I need you to listen.
Believe what I say,
But only if you would
Understand what I mean,
but only if you could,
as roundabout as this is, there is a point.
Right there, at the tip of your ears-
a point you should hear-
you should, you should.
You sitting out there
you who read this,
you who breathe air,
you are tempt to dismiss,
this as a rhyme without reason
but you see, son
or daughter
I bother to tell you
that the arms that I took;
the qualities stolen?
Are only impressions,
a strict passion of the soul.
We come from each other-
all stolen.
I stole.
But put the pieces together,
and what do you see?
The ”you’s” that I am?
The “them’s” I could be?
You think it’s the same,
to make a “you” - “me”
But it’s a collection of “you’s,”
pieces, you see:
I’m you readers. You writers. You dancers?
Could be.
I’m you sisters, you smilers, and you are all me.
Line them up crossways and diagonally,
then cut out the pictures of,
“What have you done?”
and “Where can you be?”
A kaleidoscopic venn diagram,
of “them’s” and “thee’s”
I couldn’t list all of which defines me here
but look inside yourself and you’ll find me there.
I’ll be in your little toe,
your nose or your hair-
I’ll be in every piece
you “you’s” could spare.
But I am not you,
this you should see
same as 2 + a house +
a blue + a bee
Could equal something new,
while they may still be.
I scrounged and I pondered a
different truth I could find,
but this is the truest truth in my mind
The only definition,
I could give you, you see
The only definition-
I could give you of me.
