I Am...scholarship slam

I grew up in a world that discourages me

A society that tells me i shouldn't get my hands dirty

A world that tells me that I'm bossy for voicing my opinions

I'm bombarded by images telling me that my true worth is my appearance

That I should abstain from masculine activities

But I am who I am because of the people I grew up with

From my family, friends, athletes and musicians

They taught me I should be comfortable in my skin

and no one tells me how to live my life

I am who I am because I walked the dirt paths

instead of the ones already paved for me
