I Ask Why

He compliments me

Even on the days I wake up looking messy

Or when I don’t feel confident in my own skin

I ask why, he says

“Because you’re beautiful inside and out”

If I have a bad day or beat myself up,

I come home to dinner and roses, or a bubble bath

I ask why, he says

“Because you deserve to feel like a queen”

He laughs at all my jokes

When I know most of them are not funny

I ask why, he says

“Because your happiness is contagious”

He cuddles with me

No matter if I just finished a hot yoga session

Or I’m feeling sour and it’s dangerous to come close

I ask why, he says

“Because sometimes your heart pulses with mine”

Occasionally I catch him staring at me

I ask why, he says

“Because I can’t help but look at you”

He’s always by my side

Regardless if I’m crying excessively about a fish passing away

Or I’m in the bathroom all night, too sick to sleep

I ask why, he says

“Because I want to support you at your weakest”

His little gestures eventually became big

He got down on one knee with a diamond ring

And asked for my hand in marriage

I ask why, he says

“Because I love you”
