As I Become Wiser

As I become wiser:

flowers smell sweeter,

Water tastes fresher,

Animals and the ones I love are held closer.

I know now that I must cherish everything before it leaves

The same as everything else in this world does.

The weight of my mother's hand

becomes lighter.

The sharp cut

of her malevolent

silver tongue

becomes dull.

I know now that my mother

has only made me stronger.

The immense care I once held for others’ thoughts

becomes miniscule.

The miniscule care I held for myself

Becomes immense.

I know now that I matter.

The hate I held towards my sister for leaving

Becomes love.

The annoyance I feel for my brother

Becomes pleasure.

I know now that my siblings care.

As I become wiser:

I know now that not everything can stay,

I know now that words cannot change who I am.

I know now that my voice is powerful.

I know now that sometimes love is strange.

I know now that there is always a light inside

that can extinguish the darkness

that keeps filling

every crack, crevice, and corner of my mind.

As I become wiser,

I grow.
