I Beg to Differ
My mother always told me to be content.
“This is the only way to be truly happy,” she said.
However, having born in a country plagued with poverty and corruption,
Having lived half of my life where possibilities are theoretically endless,
And then having to look back at the rest of the world crumbling
Into wars, starvation, and sickness through a flat-screen TV
As I complain about being a “broke-college-student,”
I am inclined to beg to differ.
Sure, I should be grateful or feel lucky that I am able to follow my dreams.
But, as I reflect on my experiences in the last twenty-two years, which is my entire life,
Well, I cannot bring myself to simply be content.
