I Can't Help But Love Lucy

Pinned up curls in black and white,

The face of a generation,

Lucy Ricardo, the wife who broke the rules.

Lucille Ball, the woman who changed the game.

She did not deliver tactless jokes,

Or smile pretty to make a man famous.

She stood behind closed doors

Reinventing television,

reinventing America.

Lucy Ricardo was a housewife,

but Lucille Ball was a visionary.

What would change my life, you ask?

I may be seventeen, but I have a little dream:

My hair may not be able to hold a curl,

and people may never know me on the streets,

but

I will break the rules.

I will change the game.

I will reinvent television,

For women and for girls

     of whom America takes advantage.

Perhaps I will be a housewife

     one day

But the rest of my days start now,

and in the meantime,

I will be a visionary.
