I Choose to Speak

What have I learned?

Tricky tricky tricky,

A little... perhaps a lot

Yes I think a lot.

That words are not what they seem

no they wind and flow and squeeze tight around your neck

and you struggle against them

Until

you see their truth

And you laugh

That words are freedom

but only when you manage to catch them

as they bang around in your head

Like a cage being unlocked

with you own scarred hands

That words are currency

but

more valuable than a sack of gold

and more powerful than a king

So scary

to hold all that control

Don’t let it slip

I’ve learned

That life is messy

That women are strong

That people are cruel

but can also be kind

if they choose

That music is independence

That the past cannot be forgotten

That the future is ever changing

That I have a voice

I choose to speak
