I Define Myself

(poems go here) I look in the mirror and still I see The sad little girl that wrote poetry Taping keys like a piano to create a song That could be a guide in the dark Of the teenage years I still see the fear and the tears dripping off my face I sent in a package full of words that defined me That tattooed on my body that I was wounded From a battle that continued on within my body I was broken goods I sat in the car next to the mail box On that empty country road In the summer heat with the acceptance letter California Summer School for the Arts Recognition, my name, next to congratulations This would define me Poetry class, carving the bonsai I wasn’t a poet, right? After I left the only thing that made me happy Was putting my words into a poem Spoken word Poetry defines me I define myself with words
