I Gave You Flowers
I gave you flowers.
You asked for a smile and I gave it,
Asked for a kiss and I let you take it.
You asked for love, but you never had to.
The flowers were dead.
So beautiful, so vibrant.
The flowers were still dead.
I was silent to your violence,
Waiting patiently for you to lose steam and anger.
I sat and waited, beautiful and dead.
Vibrant and wilting,
Still full of color when my life line had been cut,
You aren’t the same person I gave flowers to.
I waited,
Hoping the fancy water in my mason jar vase would keep me alive.
It breaks your heart when you’re older to remember,
How many flowers you killed without realizing you were doing it.
But you knew,
You knew that if I gave you the flowers I had that they wouldn’t survive,
Maybe you didn’t want me to.
