I have a best friend
I have a best friend.
He is 5'11 inches of sarcasm and bad taste in television.
He once made me watch a sizzlers comercial from the 90's,
for three straight hours!
Because that's just the kind of person he is,
He's irreverent, and stubborn,
and a borderline alchoholic,
But, I have a best friend.
And from the second I learned to drive,
I zoomed in my 2014 kia soul,
right up to the steps of his catholic high school,
to go a whole lot of no where with him,
but I always made sure to make fun of his uniform,
and fight about who's music was shittier.
Because to me, any joke aimed at him,
was the best joke.
His grandfather and I are on a first name basis,
despite the fact,
that behind my back,
he calls me 'the oriental girl'
Because while I don't have a single drop
of asian blood in these veins,
he fought in world war 2,
and my eyes are a bit too almond for his taste.
But, I, I have a best friend.
and when I graduated high school one year early,
and didn't like how twin sized bed in my new dorm room made me feel lonely,
he offered me his.
I spent most of that winter curdled up next to him,
watching whatever trash he had on that day,
under that ratty old white blanket he called his "girlfriend",
and he and I tiptoed over the minefields of romance
and teenage sexual frustration.
Because we had a best friend.
And he knows me better than anyone else.
He calls me out on my shit,
and tells me how it is.
He spent the summer after his senior year,
all around Europe,
popping from the eiffel tower, to Auschwitz,
I couldn't afford to go with,
but he still made sure to facetime me drunk,
each night,
to tell me I have the same crooked nose,
as all the polish people he was currently surrounded by.
Because while his grandfather doesn't know my true ethnicity,
he sure does, and when I look into his eyes, I notice they're the same
exact color as mine,
so even though he decided to go to a college 782 miles from mine,
we still remember to visit twice a year,
on christmas and my birthday,
because each other's presence is the best gift we can ask for
even if its just to get baked as shit in hotel room,
half an hour outside of portland,
because that shit matters!
and most importantly,
I have a best friend,
and what a rare thing that is.
