I Hear Union High School Singing

I hear Union High School singing;

            The rhythm of the

            Long-held sighs.

            Counting minutes instead of

            Miles to travel before sleep,

            In speechless conformity,

            Proclaiming the

                        First Amendment.

I hear Union High School singing;

            The clattering cadence of

            Cafeteria cardboard.

            Cracking at the core,

            Consuming and

             Being consumed

              By

What’s for lunch?

I hear Union High School singing;

            The hush of the

            Rushed whispers.

            Shut eyes and open mouths

            Dripping with gossip,

            Catching flies with

            Aspartame vinegar and

                        Poisoned honey.

I hear Union High School singing;

            The buzz of

                  -cough quickly-

            Opening text messages instead of

            Textbooks.

            Hide from the classroom to

            Escape into characters,

                        140 or less.

I hear Union High School singing;

            The hum of the

            First pitch

            At the baseball diamond,

            Stands filled with disciples,

            While the auditorium,

            Stands filled with music,

                        Preaches to the choir.
