I Hope
I hope you know that I don’t own you,
And that I never will.
I’m only here to accompany you.
Together, we’ll overcome life’s big hill.
If I ever force you against your will,
Please, feel free to kick me out.
I, of all people
Have experienced what relationships are about.
I should be the one
To fight for your rights
When you seem to have misplaced your voice.
I should be the one
To brave the flames of your fury
Despite the danger of being burned.
I should be the one
To dip into the darkness of your mind
To find that bit of glowing hope;
Though it might be as small as a piece of glitter,
They are both stubborn and hard to rid.
I should be the one
By your side through it all.
I hope you know that you don’t own me,
And that you never will.
My heart is as strong as iron;
It has become the box where it was once encaged.
Though you know my heart can’t break,
I hope there’s still a mark you’ll make.
I hope your addition aren’t vines
That sneak through the cracks between my walls
And threaten my demise.
Instead,
I hope they’re the flowers
Planted at the root of my exterior
That coax my monochrome doors to open.
That’s, when you know it’s love.
