I learned
Be Kind. Work hard. Help people.
They said that would be enough.
So I walked through the halls.
I practiced what they preached.
But why did no one talk to me?
Why was I so alone?
I was nice,
So shouldn't they want to be my friends?
There must be something wrong, I decided.
Maybe I'm just too strange.
I guess I annoy them, I thought.
Maybe, I should just stop talking.
They can't judge me that way.
I got used to walking by myself,
And I was scared when I had to speak.
I just wanted them to like me!
Was that really too much to ask?
I'm fine, I decided.
I do better alone.
Maybe I don't want them for friends, I thought.
But they don't seem to want me either.
What am I doing wrong?
Be kind. Work hard. Help people.
That is what I did.
Form to the mold. Don't let them in.
Be yourself, but not too much.
That is also what I did.
But here is what I have learned:
Be yourself. Accept others. Embrace strange.
It all makes sense now!
The real me, the happy me,
Isn't that what they really want to see?
As it turns out, yes.
