I Live By
Manifesto Poem: I Live By
I live by pretending the alarm clock doesn't actually mean I get up in the morn,
By glaring from the covers and slamming the snooze button with scorn.
I live by eating my breakfast while I drive over the speed limit in my car,
By running late every day to a school of 'education' over 20 miles far.
I live by sleeping through one class to the next and each thereafter,
By waking only long enough to hear myself snore and my peers erupt with laughter.
I live by racing to lunch only to be served an attempt at turning death into food,
By trading my lunch to a freshman half wit who doesn't know that they are being screwed.
I live by going to the places that I truly enjoy after hours of painful class,
By being in theater, on field, in dark alley, or someplace covered in shattered glass.
I live by working a shift or two here or there,
By earning my keep so I can go back home to my lair.
I live by taking the scenic route home after a long day of work with no play,
By counting the deer and rabbits who take naps by the road everyday.
I live by getting home in time to see my family depart from the kitchen table,
By watching brother go to Halo, mother to couch, father to garage and sister to stable.
I live by letting notes remain in their binders, not to be seen,
By letting homework remain undone as per my daily routine.
I live by sitting in solitude in a room painted tear blue,
By listening to rock music too loud and napping in my shoes.
I live by staying up too late and not going to get my much needed sleep,
By being awake and imagining all the things in this world that creep.
I live by knowing that tomorrow will come and be the same,
By knowing my days look alike to my joy, but that you may find lame.
Perhaps you find me odd, perhaps you find me strange.
Perhaps you look at my 'normal' day and you just wish you could make it change.
But do not fret, do not pity me, do not shake your head,
This is the way I live by, this is the way I earn my bread.
This is the way I live by, and it shall never transfer
For this is the life that makes me the happiest, this is the life I prefer.
This is the way I live by and nothing will ever change that,
For simplicity in living is what I adore and is nothing to scoff at.
