I Love To Read

I love to read.

Ever since I was young

my mother always read to me before bed.

I would always gaze and wonder.

Not only at the book but,

also at my mother.

I would wonder what was going on in her head.

She would use so much emotion and passion

in every single word that she said.

Even though my mother might not know this,

When she read to me at night

I wouldn’t have nightmares that would terrorize me.

I loved those nights.

When she would come in with a book and a glass of water.

That she could sip on while she read.

I remember the nights

when she would get to busy to read

or even say goodnight.

Even the nights when I needed her the most.

Those nights when the darkness took over

and I was left there to deal with my inner demons.

I eventually learned that she

wasn’t going to come

to read and wish me good night.

As I get older

I have found my love

for reading.

I love how you can get lost in the words

and can get swept away like

loose pages in a book.

Someday I will have kids

and I will read to them

like my mother did for me.

Except

I will never, ever leave them

Until they ask me to leave.
