I Love You Like

I love you like the moon

Occasionally drawing hours of

Awestruck contemplation

But mostly

Cycling eternally into and out of view

Even when least expected

In a casual

But comforting loop of

I am here

I am here

I am here

I love you like a favorite mug

Set absently just out of reach

That moment of jarring

Wrongness

When your fingers close around empty air

Before you look over to discover

That it’s just where you left it

And that

Euphoric familiarity

Can be picked back up

In an instant

With the slightest effort

I love you like bedrock

Solid

And steady

And vast

Rarely can you see it on the surface

But rarer still can it be removed

And never in its entirety

I love you like a perennial bloom

Its glory is

Not always in

The brilliant forefront

But it is always there

Waiting

Roots fisted deep in the earth

And leaves basking

Peacefully in the sun and rain

For something

Some fresh trigger

To bring it shockingly to the eye once again

And take your breath away

I love you like the ocean

Immutable and ever-there

But not on your mind

Until

Abruptly

The tide rushes in

With a bubbling shock

Leaving you

Surprised

And giddy

And aware
