I Make Me

The photos you see of me are not me

I wish you could see the me that I see

No filters, no captions, no hashtags, just me

The truly authentic version of me

That Valencia filter cannot disguise

That I have brown skin and brown eyes

There is no shade lighter that I would rather be

So hiding behind filters doesn’t help me

Because I make me

That song quote for a caption is not my words

Just something to make you like the picture

Only because it is something familiar you have heard

If I quoted my own words you would definitely see

“I am tired of smiling how can’t you see!”

I don’t need these captions

Because I Make Me

What hashtag could tell you that I am tired as could be?

Hashtag Sleepy, Hashtag Save Me?

But, I do not hashtag these things because I want you to see the happy me

So I hashtag life and hashtag worry free is what I’ll put

Because I don’t want my picture to get overlooked

Those selfies you see of me are not really me

But in my head I am still aware that

I Make Me
