I Never Did Like Poetry
I never did like poetry,
‘Least not in books or school.
There was no A, B; C, B, D, D,
Nor rhythm to beat to.
I never did like poetry,
A jumbled mess of words.
The sounds were garbled, mixed and marbled,
Like nothing I had heard.
I never did like poetry,
For its mindless ranting on.
But late one evening, tired and weeping,
I read a heartfelt song.
I never did like poetry,
I wouldn’t budge my claim.
But if a free bird leapt while a caged one wept,
Then I’d throw the world away.
I never did like poetry,
But Maya broke my pride.
As my heart caved in, and I saw my sin,
I knew that I had lied.
I guess I DO like poetry,
With rhythm and with sway.
I like the tears and deepest fears,
That heart-felt words allay.
I guess I DO like poetry,
Albeit only some.
I like the songs where we all fight on
To make our cracked lives one.
