I Never Thought It'd Be You
You gave me life;
not figuratively, literally you gave me life.
You held me in your arms
and I grapsed your finger with
every ounce of baby strength
that I had.
I grew and you mourned,
the lost of a father, a best friend, and a mentor.
I was too young,
sitting in a black dress and
playing with my barbies.
The growing continued and
the drinking became a regular.
She threatened to leave,
but I was still too young,
holding onto the boy that looked just like you
wondering if the yelling would ever stop.
Because I loved you I tried.
I tried to help and
I tried to be your little princess again.
Time ran on and
I became weary.
The good times became few while
the bad times piled on.
You are better now,
no more drinks in your hand.
She tries to act like she is happy,
but I know the truth now.
There is a dark look in your eyes;
light barely breaks the mold.
Because I loved you I tried,
but I never thought it'd be you.
