I Never Was

She was always more intelligent than I,

and had a way of words I envied

with a passion that I am ashamed to admit.

She was always more noble than I,

cherishing those with prudent care,

as I selfishly hoarded mine.

She was always more of an anchor to me,

than I, to her, and while I like to think

that she needs me,

she was always more independent than I,

yet that’s not something I would

resent her for. After all,

she was always more sweet than I,

and her mere presence is enough

to keep me forever satisfied.
