I Packed My Heart In A Box

I packed my heart in a box, Along with my soul and my spirit and core of my being The scent of my skin and the curve of my lips And the imaginary tracing of my fingertips Along your fragile cheek. I packed my life in a box, With all my childhood memories, my quirks and quests, The sound of my voice when I stutter over sentences, The feel of my heartbeat against my skin. Were you to press your palm against my chest. I packed everything in a box, And sent it away. To someone who may open it, and see nothing. Except a simple box filled with the smell of molded air. And not a single tangible object inside. I packed my heart in a box, So that while your miles away, doing what you please, With who you please, And not thinking about me at the slightest, There will be something that beats within you, Sending the right chemicals to your brain, To make you smell my candy lip-gloss, And hear me telling you you’re beautiful, Even if you really don’t. I packed my life in a box, So that while you’re busy Erasing the answer to whatever test In whatever class for whatever subject, I can give you the feeling that I sit behind you, With my arms around your waist and my lips to your ear Telling you you’re beautiful, Telling you that you’ll do fine on this test, And even if you don’t, I’ve failed my tests too, and I’m still here. I packed everything in a box, To ship it away. So now, when people tell me to have a heart And stop rejecting everyone except you, Or when people tell me to get a life, And stop staring wistfully at my phone. I can tell them I no longer have those things, For I packed them in a box and shipped them away To a girl who is currently miles away, And doesn’t know she has them at all.
