I Saw the World

I sent a hummingbird into the world,

To see what he could see,

To witness all the tales worth telling,

So he could tell them to me.

His response was unexpected,

So it fell upon deaf ears.

He said,

I saw the world as it were today,

but now today is yesterday.

Tomorrow is today,

there's more to see.

The world is new,

nothing as it used to be.

There is more to be told

Than I could ever tell,

So you will have to go,

And see it yourself.

I told him to leave this room,

Never to return,

Unless he had some tale to tell

To make my anger turn.

He left for a season,

Never returning.

Until that long lost day.

He came to me as if in dream,

telling of all the scenes he'd seen.

Of all the wars won and lost,

And all the strife in vain.

Of death and loss.

The pains of all,

How all must face what they believe.

This message that was brought to me,

Rent my one room world.

It wet my eyes,

Tore up my soul,

Til all was lost inside.

After all was said and done,

He had one last thing to say.

I was already broken and lost,

And yet he told me anyway.

I saw the world as it were today,

but now today is yesterday.

Tomorrow is today,

there's more to see.

The world is new,

nothing as it used to be.

There is more to be told

Than I could ever tell,

So you will have to go,

And see it yourself.

As I trembled and shook,

With tears in my eyes,

I uttered a softly spoken plea.

Please, leave this room,

Never to return.

He took his flight,

And then was gone.

Saying nothing in return.

Making his way into what he said,

Was a world as new as today.

I was lost inside my soul

Time was nothing to me

I was torn with anguish inside

For what that bird had said he'd seen

That I myself needed to see

He came again I knew not when

My mind went dark, my heart gone cold

I did not want to be there or then.

When he again spoke to me against my plea,

He said these things to me,

I have told you of change,

I have told you of darkness,

I have given you so much more knowledge

Than you could ever have imagined.

But information never was experience.

So I bring you this one last message,

In hopes hope you will listen.

I have seen happiness,

And joy in that world.

The one you fear,

The one of which I've told.

The laughter and smiles,

Of both the old and the young

Loving and kindness

between all those who seek it.

If you would but look,

To go out and see

You would find it for you,

Not just from me.

Now I've shared all there is,

From here I will never return.

So now make your choice,

To stay or to go.

I saw the world as it were today,

but now today is yesterday.

Tomorrow is today,

there's more to see.

The world is new,

nothing as it used to be.

There is more to be told

Than I could ever tell,

So you will have to go,

And see it yourself.

Then he left,

Gone forever.

He was gone,

And I was alone.

I looked at the door

Of my one room world

Now knowing and yet clueless

To what awaited outside

I lifted myself off the floor

And walked slowly forward.

I looked at the knob, new without use

That would open that ageless old door.

I gripped the knob

With equal force

As the fear that gripped my heart

I pulled the door open

And left that one room

That had been my world

That now was no longer.

I left that room,

And then was gone,

Never to return,

But now never alone.

I have experienced many things since,

More than I could have imagined.

I could try to tell you all the tales

But I will tell you this instead;

I saw the world as it were today,

but now today is yesterday.

Tomorrow is today,

there's more to see.

The world is new,

nothing as it used to be.

There is more to be told

Than I could ever tell,

So you will have to go,

And see it yourself.
