I Used To Be Afraid

I used to be afraid

I used to see the faces of the crowd and cower

I used to see the lights and retreat to safety

I used to refuse to even try

I took a step towards what scared me

I stepped out onto the stage for the first time

Everything went wrong

But despite that something felt right

I tried again

This time it was different; effortless

It was obvious something had changed

Everything seemed to fall into place

I was hooked

Whenever I could I was getting on stage

No matter how large the role

It was a place I finally felt safe

I cannot live without it

The stage is where I feel like I am free

It is the one place I can be myself by being someone else

Theatre has become a part of me

I used to be afraid

But now I am thriving

I get the chance to live my life through so many others

Now I am not afraid
