I Was Here

I write because words are eternal.

Long after I am gone,

when nobody remembers how hard I studied

the awards I worked to receive

the people I reached out to

the dedication I put into my job

the money I earned in adulthood

When I am no longer able to work

to inspire people to take action

to help those in need

when my arms cannot give hugs

my eyes cloud the world

my legs have no strength

to carry me to my loved ones

I still have my words

to carry me on.

When I am just a pile of dust

floating in the heavens

with no trace left on this earth

they may not remember me

but at least they will see my words.

My words will prove

I was here.
